So not all benign tumors or non cancerous require surgery but I tumors of certain types are so
common that we can just watch them we know that they grow very slowly perhaps they're so
small like a small little wart on your hand you wouldn't bother you so I have it removed and
the same thing happens in the brain we have these little bumps that can form on the lining of
the skull that are small maybe the size of a pea they're not causing any problems and so we
wouldn't recommend that those be removed but we would recommend that you follow those
because no one can predict which of those little bumps is going to be stable and not grow at all
which ones are going to grow slowly or which ones might grow rapidly and the ones that grow
rapidly of course can get big and once they get big they put pressure on the brain and then
patients become symptomatic it's a lot harder to deal with when they get big it's much easier
to deal with them when they're small so we try to identify the ones that are going to grow and
once we see that they're growing we recommend treatment to patients now benign tumors are
the most common type which are called meningioma as they grow from the lining of the
brain they can be treated with surgery but they can also be treated with radiosurgery which is a
relatively new treatment but extremely effective as effective as surgery for small tumors the
radiosurgery is a type of radiation that's focused like a laser just on the benign tumor itself and
is extremely effective at killing them and keeping them from growing so in general for
benign tumors that are small the options are observation to see whether it's growing or not if
it is growing than either radial surgery or surgery to effectively treat the tumor for benign
tumors that are larger or perhaps are near critical structures for instance the nerves that go to
the eye which are very sensitive to radiation sometimes surgery becomes the favored
approach just because the side-effects of radio surgery are such that we think surgery is a better option. Next Types of Brain Cancer and Symptoms
